Auburn Lake
Auburn Lake is a very small lake with clear water on the west side of the metro area in the city of Victoria, Minnesota. In this video made on a Warm July day, I was able to catch many small bass as well as one monster bass that weighed 5 lbs 10 oz. I fished this lake with frogs and soft plastic baits.
Auburn Lake is actually a pair of lakes joined by a small stream that you can sometimes get a boat through if the water is high enough. It also has a good access that is maintained by the Carver Park Reserve.
It was a beautiful and calm July day for me to fish this deep little lake, but good weather for me is sometimes not very nice for the fish. They often seem to like different types of weather than I do.
I began the day fishing a Jig-worm in the western basin along the deep weed-line. I managed to catch a bass or two on a Baby Brush Hog before I gave into the temptation to see if I could get my boat through the creek to the eastern basin. I was able to get my boat through the creek, but the first thing that I noticed was how much murkier the water was in the east basin.
I switched to a rubber frog in the murkier water and caught one bass in the lily pads and had one more strike on the frog before I decided to go back to the western basin where I had more confidence that I could catch enough fish to complete a TV show by the end of the day. I would love to go back to the east basin again sometime to get more familiar with it.
Back in the west basin, I resumed catching Bass on the jig-worm as I worked my way around the shoreline fishing the outside edge of the weeds. Later in the day I came to an area where the outside weed-line was very close to shallow water but also very near some good looking lily pads that I just had to throw a rubber frog to. Much to my surprise I hooked into what would turn out to be one of the largest bass that I would catch that year on my TV show.
The day may have started out slowly, but it finished with a bang!
